Veterans’ Issues
Our country has been blessed by the service of men and women in our armed services, and our commonwealth has the privilege of being the home to many veterans. In fact, one out of ten Virginians is a military veteran. As a veteran myself, I will commit to honoring them as they have honored us with their service. I am dedicated to repaying our debt with care, support, respect, and loyalty.
As your Delegate, I support plans to:
- Establish a Virginia Compact with Veterans to make Virginia a leader in its respect for service men and women.
- Make the Automated Claims Processing System a permanent program (it is currently a pilot program) to help assist service members apply for their disability rating and veteran’s administration benefits.
- Put additional resources toward helping our returning veterans obtain employment here in Virginia. As a businessman I know first hand the great skills and work ethic that veterans bring to the workplace, but our current efforts to marry corporations with military members are fragmented. There should be a comprehensive statewide effort which focuses solely on this mission.
- Implement state hiring incentives for veterans, particularly disabled veterans applying for jobs, similar to those currently provided for federal employment.
- Support homeless military veterans here in Virginia by examining the current level of services provided to homeless vets in Virginia, identifying gaps in service, and evaluating the need for and costs of additional services. Virginia must engage in a proactive Homeless Vet program and explore how Virginia can pursue federal grant money and work with the private sector to see that these veterans are provided for.
- Establish a Virginia Day of Remembrance (Thursday prior to Memorial Day) and support the continuation of Virginia’s Wall of Honor
- Ensure that veterans buried in Virginia state veterans’ cemeteries receive the same benefits as those in national cemeteries, including a fully funded burial vault.
- Provide a 100% Real Estate Tax relief for Disabled Vets via a Virginia Constitutional Amendment
- Support the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program
- Establish the “Honor and Remember Flag” as the official flag to remember Virginians killed in the line of duty.
